INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

LATEST LEAF DISCUSSIONS 30.07.2011 18:30:00

If you're interested in a more future-proof, sustainable and emission-free way of driving, considering a Nissan LEAF could be the perfect answer. But of course, innovations bring questions, so please read on to learn more about how a Nissan LEAF could be the most cost-effective, conscience-cleaning alternative on the road.

Quick charging the LEAF in only 30 minutes could be really useful, but is there a limit to how often I should use it?
Once a day is fine. If customers follow our maintenance and usage guidelines we expect that after 5 years the battery will retain around 80% of its original charge.

In addition, the LEAF comes with a 5-year electrical drive train warranty that covers the battery and other electric drive train components over this period.

What sort of charging infrastructure is there in the UK?
This varies significantly throughout the country, but as an example – London already has 250 charge points and another 1000 are due to be installed by 2013.

The North East already has over 100 existing points and over 1,000 are planned in the next two years.

The Government scheme 'Plugged in Places' already has seven cities that have committed to invest heavily in charging points over the coming months and years.

However, the most popular and convenient method of charging is overnight at home. This is when the vehicle is stationary for long periods and also when the cheaper overnight electricity tariffs are available.

Are pure electric vehicles the only low-carbon option in the long term?
No, other technologies will play a key role in the future, although electric vehicle technology is more advanced and available today, whereas other technologies such as Hydrogen Fuel will not be commercially available for a number of years.

What does it cost to 'fuel' a Nissan LEAF and how far can I go?
A full charge in a LEAF will take you 109 miles (NEDC cycle) and will cost you £1.25 using British Gas's overnight Standard (Economy 7) tariff. At peak rate (British Gas Standard Tariff) it will cost £3.37.

Does my driving style affect the range of an electric car?
Yes.

In the standard NEDC (New European Driving Conditions) test, the LEAF achieved 109 miles on a single charge.

This can be affected by a number of factors including terrain, use of heating and air conditioning, and the amount of acceleration and braking.

The car constantly updates the driver with the number of miles remaining depending on their driving style and amount of charge remaining in the battery.

The car mapping system will alert the driver if there is insufficient charge to get them to their location and also highlight the nearest charging points if required.
